How do you advertise an XR game using virtual production itself?

We needed to showcase our AR Christmas game where players have to move around to find the door, and listen to a christmas carol, guessing which M&M's are harmonising. Unlocking the door reveals a spatial audio carol, through an immersive production that demonstrated mixed reality storytelling.

01 — Fireplace

A piece of firewood, generatively modelled.

An incredibly simple but symbolic object — chosen deliberately to test the accuracy of the model relative to the precision of my vocabulary within the prompt.

For Shutterstock.ai, I tested out their Generative 3D Software asking it to 3D model a description for a piece of firewood. I chose this both to test the accuracy of the model relative to my prompting, and to see how it would compare to ungenerated pieces of firewood within the fire.

I art directed the Virtual Lighting for the fireplace, configuring the technical lighting. I kept in mind both physical and digital elements, thinking about which direction the lighting would flicker on the ARRI Virtual Production stage. The lighting colours chosen for the fireplace reflect which M&M's are singing behind our Virtual Production door.

02 — Environment

A virtual New York apartment.

Built in Unreal Engine 5. Optimised for the high-resolution LED volume at ARRI Studios.

As the AR Game Developer and VP Environment Artist, I was responsible for building the virtual New York apartment in Unreal Engine 5. This involved creating 3D assets in Blender, textures, and materials to achieve photorealism. I optimised the environment for real-time rendering on the high-resolution LED volume at ARRI Studios, ensuring smooth performance.

Key decisions included: scale of the windows central to the robotic arm following shot, placement of the spotlights within the scene, and configuring the overall lighting.

03 — The Door

The central interaction touch-point.

To transition the XR UI into the Virtual Production scene, I replicated the door as the central interaction touch-point, designing the M&M selection circles that would be used to unlock the door.

Mixed reality storytelling that became its own advertisement.

Well-received by NM Productions and virtual production experts. The project successfully demonstrated how virtual production techniques can be used to create compelling advertisements for XR experiences. Used as promotional footage for WPP's Creative Technology Initiative and Shutterstock — showcasing the future of XR advertising and establishing new workflows for mixed reality creation.

From AR to LED volume.

A door, a carol, an apartment that only existed on a screen.
